Auto Refresh every so many seconds slowing editors down

      Description

      Hello

Up until I think either 3.0.5 or 3.0.6 (it's certainly recent), Aptana was working fine on my reasonably large PHP project (10500 files). But in the last couple (possible more) updates, the editor has become very jerky, and I've noticed it's doing a lot of "Refreshing Workspace" requests - more than once a minute - and CPU time is shooting up to 85%.

Since disabling that option the editor behaves much better so I think there's been a bottleneck introduced recently in that area.

      Cheers

I've just timed it, and the auto refresh happens every 11 seconds it seems and takes about 1 second. CPU shoots up each time to around 85%. Maybe if there is no obvious way around this you could add a parameter setting how often the refreshes occur?

Which setting exactly are you disabling? Is the project attached to source control?

        Hi Ingo

The setting is the general->workspace->refresh automatically one.

The project is under source control (git) but I didn't specify that when I imported the project - I used the Existing Folder as New Project option not the pulling down from git repository one.

        Cheers

Ok, Aptana is still a bit slower than it was before and so being less responsive. Unfortunately I think that just means this is a comment on one of the causes but isn't the only problem (in other words the effect of this refresh was noticeable because something else is also slowing down the editor).

So I guess this is now too vague a comment to be useful, other as a request for controlling how often the auto refresh happens perhaps?

If I get a better clue on what might be slowing down the editor, I'll repost.

Can you try to do a Project -> Clean -> Clean All and see if that helps?
This action will clean and re-build the PHP index and may take some time for 10k files.
        Thanks

Ok will do - will repost if this doesn't help, so your (premature??) change of this to resolved can remain so

        Best regards

Ok, I've been using it all day, and over a period it seems to get slower (e.g. scrolling shows text in black and white until it gets a chance to colourise the text). I don't recall seeing anything like that until recent upgrades and I use it every day.

I've been measuring resident memory using top (at least, I think the %MEM column is the percentage of resident to total), and it only goes up. A restart had its memory at 14% which over time increased to 16%. A rebuild as suggested increased the total amount of memory from 16% to 19% and it's stayed there well after the rebuild is over. I'm assuming it should go up and down (my knowledge of linux memory usage is hazy), so I would have though this is a problem.

Closing all the editors hasn't reduced memory usage either. So it would seem to me that maybe there are some processes that are grabbing memory to do e.g. php indexing, but aren't releasing that memory at the end. Maybe these are the cause of the problem and the auto refresh just exacerbated that?

My machine is several years old with 2GB memory. However, the point is it didn't seem to be a problem until recently.

        Anyway hope that helps.

        Cheers

Can you please try again with the latest builds on "nightly"? We've made substantial changes there.
